A Taste of Britain is Pennsylvania's Sampling of English Teatime

By Kelly Church

A Taste of Britain is a small, classic British café with pastries, teas and more. Owner Debbi Heth said guests can order from the full lunch and dessert menus in Wayne, PA. There's also a children's menu. Some guests really embrace the environment at A Taste of Britain, showing up in classic English dress.

"Our café is not your grandmother's tea room," Heth said. "English customers tell us it's much more like the local tea room at home, a comfortable and cozy place to gather, chat, eat and drink. The décor is warm and inviting, not stuffy or even to frilly. We have customers come in wearing gloves and fascinators, and we love it."

However, Heth said there are also women who pop in to the café after a workout, wearing their gym clothes and feeling just as welcome as everyone else. The café welcomes men and families too, for a relaxing afternoon of tea and a nice meal.

Customers can opt for a full afternoon tea, which includes a pot of tea; eight tea sandwiches; fresh scones with clotted cream, lemon curd and preserves; and an assortment of mini pastries. The customer gets to choose their type of tea and their flavor of scones.

"It's really a charming experience and you get to try so many different flavors in one meal," Heth said.

Heth also recommends on the menu the Blue Salad with mixed greens, English stilton, chopped apples, dried cranberries and sugared walnuts. The salad is served with A Taste of Britain's homemade balsamic. The roast beef croissant is another favorite, with brie cheese, caramelized onions and a creamy horseradish sauce.

For those who want to indulge in a British favorite, the café also has chicken pot pie, a Cornish pasty and a ploughman's platter with three English cheeses, fruit, crackers, pickled onions and Branston pickle.

A Taste of Britain also offers catering for events, large or small. They offer takeaway catering and full-service catering, which includes delivery, assembly and clean up.

"I am so proud of the catering that we offer," Heth said. "The type of food we specialize in just fits the bill so nicely in many different situations. The Afternoon Tea really consists of finger foods, so it's easy for your guests to eat if they are standing and mingling."

Products can also be purchased through A Taste of Britain, including favorite preserves and canned goods.
