Adventure in Fun Has Been Spreading Smiles For Over a Decade

By Pamela Sosnowski

From a very young age, Shonna Flanigan has loved to make children smile. She was 12 years old when she began dressing up as a clown to entertain kids and started to make a living from it while in her late teens. That drive to spread happiness plus the desire to achieve work/life balance after becoming a mother is what inspired her to launch Adventure in Fun, her Gettysburg-based business that provides a variety of entertainment services for birthday parties, school shows, weddings, and more.

"When I had children of my own, I wanted to be able to part time and work from home but still get out and meet different people," she said. "I have been a children's entertainer since I was 17 years old and I have had Adventure In Fun since 2005. Our services are perfect for any event because we provide quality family entertainment and bring happiness and smiles to people."

Adventure in Fun's offerings run the gamut from face painting to costumed characters for events. Flanigan and her staff are well versed in a multitude of talents, not the least of which is balloon twisting and decoration. The company is capable of sculpting nearly any object, animal, or animated character out of balloons; they've even recreated lightsabers and a full-scale motorcycle entirely out of balloons. They can also transform an event space into any theme with backdrops, sculptures, and decor made out of colorful balloons.

Such skills are not developed overnight; as Flanigan explained, her team has received education in balloon mastery and also regularly attends seminars to learn how to out-do themselves.

"Dustin Queary and I are international award winning balloon artists," she said. "We continually improve our skills by attending conventions, workshops and lectures. We have taught balloon skills internationally at the entertainment industry's largest conventions."

Flanigan's company also employs an animal handler to bring exotic creatures to venues such as schools and parties. The shows are meant to be educational, fun, and interactive, often giving audience members an opportunity to touch or handle a unique animal. Basic shows run for 30 minutes while premium packages last up to an hour long with extra time for answering questions. Some of the animals regularly featured in these presentations include turtles, snakes, lizards, and tropical birds.

The company also specializes in princess and pirate parties for children that typically come with costumed characters and balloon decor. Clients also have the option of selecting props for the setting such as treasure chests, pirate skeletons, and palm trees for the pirate-themed events. An exotic animal such as a parrot or alligator can also be included for the pirate-themed events.

Adventure In Fun serves most of Pennsylvania as well as parts of Maryland, Virginia, and D.C., although the team has traveled across and outside of the country. The company is fully licensed and insured and is a BBB accredited business with an A+ rating. Numerous clients have raved about Adventure in Fun's professionalism, creativity, and rapport with children.

For Flanigan, the best part of her job is still the same as when she was a teen: spreading happiness.

"The thing I enjoy most about my work is making people smile," she said. "We are often invited to fun events, but the most special times are when we perform for non profits and benefits for people in need or with health issues or disabilities. There is nothing more rewarding than making someone who feels low feel better and bringing a smile and some happiness to them, even if it is just for a moment."
