Bollywood Bar and Grille Brings Star Quality Indian Food to Harrisburg

By Pamela Sosnowski

Central Pennsylvania may experience cold, snowy winters like much of the country, but as far as Dinesh Purohit is concerned, once you step into his Harrisburg-based Bollywood Bar and Grille, you're in Bollywood.

"The inspiration behind opening Bollywood Bar and Grille was to bring diversity in central Pennsylvania," he said. "The way I look at it, I am (an) ambassador of the 21st century India. We didn't go for a stereotypical Indian restaurant. We picked a theme and what better way to showcase Indian culture than world famous Bollywood?"

Bollywood Bar and Grille opened in 2016 and has won over many customers, including those who never tried north Indian cuisine before. The walls are decorated with images of Bollywood screen stars, but the menu is the real star, featuring traditional dishes such as tandoori, curries, and korma, and new creative ones including garlic honey shrimp and the kaju roll made from ground cashews. Purohit says that the freshness and aromas will excite everyone that enters the restaurant.

"There is great anticipation when you walk in and we truly give you the spiciness of the curries and sweetness of our breads," he said. "All the rich aromatic spices give you enough ups and downs that when you walk out, you are happy and satisfied and craving for more."

The restaurant serves a weekday buffet from 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM, and is open daily for lunch and dinner with plenty of choices for both meat lovers and vegetarians. Appetizers include favorites such as samosas, which are triangle-shaped pastries stuffed with potatoes and other vegetables, and chaat, which encompasses a variety of savory bites and is often served as street food in parts of India. Several flavors of soft naan bread are also available, but for customer favorites, Purohit cites the garlic honey shrimp as tops on the list.

"Since the use of garlic in Indian food is prevalent, (our) chef came up with idea of combining the sweet from honey and the savoriness of garlic," he said. "No other food other than shrimp accents this flavor very well."

The restaurant is also a popular venue for showers, birthday parties, and other gatherings and may be rented for a private gathering. The reason why, explains Purohit, is that the chef knows how to please a crowd, even those that do not typically eat Indian food.

"Our food is made in such a way that everyone enjoys it and satisfies everyone's palate," he said. "Our chef is highly trained and often offers food which is not from the menu and give an Indian flavor to many crowd favorite food. We have hosted and catered many corporate events, weddings and birthday parties in the past."

Bollywood Bar and Grille offers its full menu online for convenient take out ordering, and the website features a monthly promotion whether it's a discounted price for the buffet, or a coupon for dinner, or other special. To view the menu and learn more about the restaurant, visit
