Bonu Cafe and Catering Has Kolaches And More

By S. Mathur

Sam Zomorrodian, Owner of Bonu Cafe and Catering in Exton, PA, is used to questions about the name: What does Bonu mean? What language is that?

"While most might guess that bonu simply means good, a reasonable conclusion after looking over the menu, the truth is that Bonu Café is named after a person," he said. "Bonu is the first name of the incredible chef and inspiration behind the restaurant. Bonu was the mother of Sam and Bijan, owners of the restaurant and catering business that opened in Exton and Malvern in 2012."

With recipes that are inspired by Bonu's love of cooking, and filled with fresh ingredients and creativity, the business has expanded from a small catering service to open two cafes. The Bonu Café Express provides great food for families and working professionals in the area. The menu is eclectic and includes Greek, East European and Middle Eastern dishes alongside traditional American favorites.

"Bonu Café Express is a small, European style restaurant with a handful of tables and booths which makes for a cozy atmosphere," Zomorrdian said. "The menu offers a variety of flavors and dishes around the world mixed in with American favorites with a twist. The staff is talkative and friendly and when they're not busy in the kitchen, don't be surprised if they pull up a chair and have a coffee with you."

All food is prepared fresh, from scratch, and the menu has some unusual items like kolaches, chicken quesadillas, kabobs, lamb gyro and falafel sandwiches. Kolache, for those who were wondering, is a bite-sized pastry with fruit filling from Eastern Europe. There are also breakfast and lunch kolaches with eggs, ham and cheese. The secret is in the dough.

"Bonu Café is the only restaurant offering Kolaches," Zomorrdian said. "We make our dough on site with our family recipe, prepared and baked to order. Chicken Quesadillas are a Bonu best seller, and ours are unique because of the way we marinate the chicken."

Kabob varieties include chicken, beef, salmon and lamb, all with a special marinade. The lamb gyros too come with a special sauce that people rave about. There are wraps and burritos as well. All dishes are served with light basmati rice. Guests appreciate the delicious food, generous helpings and friendly welcome from the owner. There's also home delivery, so it's an easy matter to have a great dinner even after a tiring day at work.

The catering service offers several types of menus and services, from formal and corporate to party trays. Food choices include vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and Ayurvedic. Full service catering provides linens, table settings, rental items, bar set-up and also serving staff and bartenders. It can accommodate everything from formal events to weddings, private parties and more.
