Cafe One Eight: Where Tried And True Cafe Traditions Blend With Front Line Innovations

By Paul Rowe

Owner of Café One Eight Kathleen Smucker and her husband have always enjoyed cafes and coffee shops. At one point, you could find them traveling anywhere from Washington, D.C. to Cambodia in search of the best coffee available on Earth. After working in the food industry for five years, this caffeinated power couple had the opportunity to purchase what is now Café One Eight in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

"We took the plunge," Smucker said. "We are continually inspired by visiting other coffee shops in New York City, Philadelphia, and other cities around the country."

Visiting these eclectic cafes and sipping unique cups of fresh joe from all over has not only graced Smucker and her husband with a refined taste for coffee, but has also invigorated the couple's sense of café atmosphere, culture, and community, helping them to embrace all that life has to offer.

Café One Eight's environment is at once inviting and relaxed, the décor both pungently modern and exuding warmth. This unique mixture of traditional and cutting edge style provides guests with a breath of fresh air.

"We believe that an inviting atmosphere, along with delicious food and coffee, brings people together from far and wide to experience something that will cause anyone to pause and appreciate life a little more," Smucker said.

Serving breakfast all day, Café One Eight's menu features best sellers and customer favorites such as the Fruit and Yogurt Parfait and the Avocado Toast. When peach season arrives, the café adds fresh local peaches to its already flourishing Signature Fruit and Yogurt Parfait made with homemade baked oatmeal and local vanilla yogurt.

"Our avocado toast is made with local Thom's Rosemary Bread, smashed avocado, sliced grape tomatoes, feta cheese, fried eggs, topped with smoked pepper, and served with a lime wedge," Smucker said. "It's divine!"

The key to success at Café One Eight lies in excitement. If something on the menu excites Smucker and her husband, it is bound to provide boundless thrills for customers. The Nitro and Cold Brew coffee on tap provides just the right amount of exuberance to enliven just about anyone's day in Lancaster. Currently, Café One Eight also offers Kombucha on tap, a delicious beverage packed with probiotics among other restorative health benefits.

If there's any room left for treats, customers indulge in Café One Eight's pastry case packed with delectable sweet treats that are guaranteed to satisfy anyone's sweet spot.

"Café One Eight is designed to inspire you beyond traditional assumption of café food," Smucker said. "We strive to serve each guest the freshest food, using local whenever possible, in our Historic downtown location."
