Cafe Sweet Street Transforms Successful Baking Business into Dine-In Experience

By Kelly Church

Café Sweet Street is a Reading, PA café and bakery, which incorporates Sweet Street Desserts, a globally recognized business for baked goods for more than 60 years. After experiencing so much growth for the last ten years, Sweet Street Desserts renovated their space to include an indoor and outdoor dining area.

"When you walk into Café Sweet Street, you get transported from Reading, PA directly to a cool café straight out of New York City," owner Brendan Jones said. "From the lighting, the art, the industrial elements, the café just exudes NYC cool. There is that buzz from the lunch crowd that makes this the place to be."

Café Sweet Street offers breakfast, lunch, pizza, weekly specials and desserts. The breakfast menu starts at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday. Customers can build their own breakfast sandwich, made with farm-fresh eggs and their choice of toppings. Omelets and bagels are also available.

For lunch, guests can enjoy everything from a handcrafted pretzel to chef salad or macaroni and cheese. For those feeling creative, build your own salads and burgers are available. Otherwise, the made-to-order lunch entrees include a wide variety of options to suit any palette. The lamb gyro pairs grilled and seasoned lamb with tomato, onion and Café Sweet Street tzatziki sauce, all inside pita bread. The almond sourdough pretzel tenders jazz up a traditional menu item, with a "nutty crunchy coating fried to excellence" and served with spicy honey mustard.

"We have so many options, it's really hard to choose [a favorite]," Jones said. "One of my favorites is our French fries. [They're] truly special. They are a seven-step process, culminating in the best French fries you have ever had."

The french fries, found on the menu as World Famous French Fries, use hand cut russet potatoes. They're double fried and "seasoned to perfection." Customers can add cheese or bacon on top.

As for Café Sweet Street's desserts, the bakery has brownies, cheesecakes, cupcakes, traditional cakes and more. For any occasion, including birthdays, congratulatory occasions and as thank you gifts, Café Sweet Street has its customers covered. Gluten free options are also available.
