Clubs Not Required: Blue Bell Country Club Is Not Just For Golfers

By Pamela Sosnowski

Blue Bell Country Club is a lot like other American country clubs; it has a golf course, clubhouse, swimming pool, dining options, and more, all surrounded by picturesque scenery. But not every country club can boast a course that was designed by "The King" himself, Arnold Palmer. Blue Bell, situated in the vibrant Whitpain Township community, is one of only three country clubs in the greater Philadelphia area to offer such a course.

"Arnold Palmer himself designed the course with both the professional and amateur in mind in 1994," Gary Murray, the director of sales and marketing, said. "The 18-hole course offers a challenging layout with rolling hills, water hazards and strategically positioned bunkers. (It) is an original work that is the culmination of over 40 years of experience building golf courses of distinction."

A full-length driving range and innovative short game practice area comprised of four green complexes and two bunkers are additional features of the prestigious course. Bentgrass fills the practice area, ensuring "real feel" conditions that mimic playing on the actual course.

The golf team consists of several PGA professionals that teach golfers of all abilities and ages, including kids. The country club's junior golf instruction program is free for children of all members and takes an individualized approach to each student while also emphasizing technique, safety, and fun.

Of course, golf isn't the only recent to visit or become a member of Blue Bell Country Club. A comprehensive workout facility offers that latest Trotter/Cybex strength and conditioning equipment, cardiovascular equipment stations, abdominal exercise equipment, mats, chrome dumbbells, and more. Personal training is also available to members through a partnership with Fit-4-You. A secluded pool area features a 25-meter long swimming pool, cabana, changing areas, and separate toddler pool. Six plexi-pave tennis courts that are lighted for night play round out the recreational activities Blue Bell has to offer.

The country club is also a popular venue for weddings, with its grand ballroom's glittering chandeliers, spacious dance floor, covered terrace for cocktails, and grounds that overlook the course and ponds. Weddings and other events may also be held at the club's sister property, the 300-year-old Normandy Farm Hotel. Booking a wedding at Blue Bell provides a couple with an event coordinator to orchestrate all of the details and onsite florist, plus access to changing rooms and other amenities.

"Every detail is managed with thoughtfulness and care," Murray said. "Our award winning event planning team personally guides you through the many choices you will make and helps to create a day for you that expresses your personal style and tastes."

The club's on-site restaurant, Putter's Grill, is noted for its fresh and seasonal ingredients as well as an evolving selection of craft beer. Putter's is often the centerpiece for events held at the country club such as Crabfest, BBQ's, and beer and wine tastings. The course also hosts over fifty outings and charity events annually, and the staff is ready to assist with all aspects of an event including planning a menu and ordering t-shirts.

No matter the reason for a visit to Blue Bell Country Club, there's an activity for all ages to enjoy, according to Murray.

"Our environment is completely family oriented and we offer our members a social calendar that appeals to every member of the family," he said. "Whether you join for golf, tennis, fitness, social events, or dining, we offer something for everyone."
