Creating a Home Garden On your Roof

By Zhenya Fomin

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

The company was founded in 2007 as a home improvement company with a focus on sustainable building practices.

Can you walk us through the process of designing a garden on one's roof?

First thing to consider is the structural integrity of the roof. Most projects would require an evaluation by a structural engineer.

Next thing to consider is the condition of the existing waterproofing membrane, which in most cases needs to be restored or replaced.

Can anyone typically have this done?

Yes, unless your roof is really steep. Flat roofs are much easier however.

How long does the process take?

Depending on the local permitting process, anywhere from 1-3 months

What a few vegetables homeowners can grow on their roofs?

Tomatoes, peppers, kitchen herbs. But really anything you would grow on the grounnd.

What are 3 ways homeowners could create their garden while remaining eco-friendly?

  • Plant local plants that would not require fertilizing.
  • Use drought tolerant plants of irrigated sparingly or with rainwater.
  • Plant edible plants like veggies and kitchen herbs, this would save on trips to the grocery store.
