Diving Cat Studio Is A Celebration of Creativity

By S. Mathur

Diving Cat Studio began as an art show hosted in Markels Roberts' own studio.

"For several years I held a semi annual show at my home studio, with artists that I personally selected," she said. "The show was a huge success, so I decided to open up a permanent show place (never liked taking down the show!) Diving Cat Studio Gallery now features approximately 300 artists' work."

The gallery is located in downtown Phoenixville, PA. A visit to the Diving Cat has been likened to a walk through an enchanted forest. Roberts' own specialization is in pottery, glass jewelry, and glass sculpture. Her sculptures are inspired by the world of nature and feature trees, leaves, dogs and cats. She is also a studio instructor.

"Pure pleasure in the experience of inspired handmade art and personal connections," Roberts said. "A joy to share."

With over 1500 square feet of display space, the gallery has artwork, jewelry, clothing, pottery and more. Roberts believes in the personal bond between artist and final owner of the artwork. Visitors are offered information about the artists, artwork and how it was produced.

"Everyday is a celebration of creativity at Diving Cat Studio Gallery," Roberts said.

The artwork makes great gifts too. Christmas ornaments from the Diving Cat are very much in demand and the soft felt toys sell out quickly Those who want to continue the visually and emotionally fulfilling experience of the store, or who cannot visit in person, can shop online. The Diving Cat online store recreates the unique experience offered by the store. To continue the sharing, there are Diving Cat Gift Cards in denominations from $25-250.

Cats are naturally part of the studio's and Roberts' own history. At her former studio, she cared for over 30 cats.

"When I opened the Diving Cat Studio Gallery in Phoenixville, I sold my house and studio to a dear friend who is also a cat lover," Roberts said. "She purchased the house with all the cats, she still watches over them today."

The gallery does have a resident cat, Rose, who is actually a soft grey. She wandered in one day and decided to stay. Staff and customers are glad she did, and she can frequently be seen in the window displays.

The Diving Cat Studio has worktables for glass and pottery. Pottery classes for adults and kids share the joy of creativity. Special events include winter getaway trips to Jamaica and a Cuba cruise.
