Everything You Need to Know about Tile Floors: An Interview with David Wallett of Wallett's Flooring

By David Wallett

Please tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Our company was started in 1992 by my wife and I, providing installation service of ceramic tile, carpet, vinyl, and hardwood. Then, in the Fall of 1998, we opened a showroom at our current location in Hummelstown. Here we show the latest styles of ceramic tile, carpet, hardwood, vinyl (LVT & LVP), and area rugs. Our products are installed by our own in-house installation teams that are trained to handle your custom installations. We offer design service along with our personal home measuring visit.

What are the most essential advantages of installing custom tiles?

Custom ceramic tile is as much form as it is function. Your bathroom may be the first lighted room you see in the morning. You want your tile selection to be something that will start your day on the right foot. It could be a bright, vibrant feel, earth tones from natural stone and glass, or remind you of that beautiful shower from your last tropical vacation. The same can be said for the end of the day when you just want to relax with a hot shower surrounded by beautiful tile accented with stone, glass, and different shapes and finishes.

What basic options do homeowners have when it comes to new tile flooring?

Options sometimes seem endless when it comes to tile. Size and shape is probably the most basic, along with color. Manufactures are producing larger formats that can be cut to multiple sizes in a single line. High definition printing, in the manufacturing process, has tile taking on natural stone and wood looks that rival the real thing. Customers no longer have to settle for square. The rectangle shape in multiple sizes offers numerous possibilities.

Is there anything that most people don't know about tile that they should know?

You get what you pay for. There is a difference between the .99 and the $6 tile. The cheaper the tile, the more variation in size and quality you will see in each box.

In what areas of the home is tile flooring most applicable and functional?

Master bathroom, foyer, kitchen, and walk in showers are popular areas for tile. Tile that looks like wood has started to catch on. Customers are using this product in high traffic areas where a wood look is preferred.

Do you have any advice for choosing the right tiling for a specific room?

Don't be in a hurry. Research different websites such as Houzz and different shelter magazines to find out what is appealing to you. Look at samples in the room the tile is going to be installed. Make sure, if the tile has a lot of color variation and movement, you have a few pieces, of the same tile, to make your selection. Most tiles have a V rating from V1-V4. V1 being uniform up to V4 is random.

What's the best way for people to contact your company?

Our web site at www.wallettsflooring.com has all our information. We encourage our customers to make an initial visit to our showroom in Hummelstown to start the selection process.
