Find Homemade Ice Cream and Sundaes Galore at Cabin on King

By Marina Jokic

The quaint ice cream shop Cabin on King brings the rustic feel of the mountains to King Street in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. Literally located in a rock grotto formed by the remains of a post-Revolutionary limestone quarry, the shop stands out from the rest. Corralled by majestic walnut, maple, and locust trees, the cabin offers a scenic outdoor atmosphere.

"[As] the sun sets, there are spotlights that illuminate the rocks and trees [creating] a relaxing feel in the summer," Smith said. "Also, on the hottest days, the grotto says cool from the rocks and the shade of the giant trees."

Owners Michael Shawn and Trisha Richardson opened the business in 2015. Prior to Cabin on King, Richardson ran an ice cream truck for over three years. Opening a brick and mortar location was the next logical step.

Smith and Richardson spent the winter of 2014 converting a former barbershop into the ice cream shop of their dreams. The name Cabin on King was a versatile description and left the possibility of serving more than just ice cream. Currently, the team is planning an expansion of the space with actual food items being added to the menu.

In 2015, Cabin on King won several awards like the "Harrisburg Patriot News Hottest Spot for Cool Treats" award, a notable distinction which put them on top among ice cream places in South Central Pennsylvania. The shop also earned the "Sentinels' Best Of" and the Shippensburg Chamber of Commerce distinction for best new business, both in 2015. Finally, they recently they took home the "Chambers Best Small Business of 2016" award and the "Shippensburg News Chronicle's Cream of the Crop" award for 2017.

"Our ice cream is made locally at Windy Knoll Farm Market & Creamery, [which] is owned and operated by a wonderful Mennonite family," Smith said. "They are always experimenting and coming up with new flavors such as two of the latest, Salty Pretzel Delight [and] Butterscotch Bomb."

Classic flavors such as Peanut Butter Overload and Triple Chocolate Earthquake are crowd favorites, both featuring rich, creamy textures and chunks of fudge, chocolate, and brownies. Several flavors make a seasonal appearance like the Orange Creamsicle, Lemon Bliss, and Peach in the summer, Pumpkin and Apple Pie in the fall, and Peppermint Stick, EggNog, and Rum Raisin come December.

Sundaes are equally varied and include delicious flavors like blueberry, coffee, and grapenut. Most of the signature sundaes have a homemade cookie on the side which is made from scratch. For folks who are avoiding dairy, Cabin on King has fruit-only smoothies chock-full of freshness and tanginess. There are no pre-made batters or powders anywhere in sight, and that's what makes this shop special.
