Find Your Sense of Adventure at the Doylestown Rock Gym

By Elisha Neubauer

The building that now houses the Doylestown Rock Gym was once one of the original airport hangars of the Doylestown airport. After new construction created updated buildings, it sat empty until local resident and climbing fan David Pastorok happened upon it. His vision to create a state-of-the-art climbing facility within the hanger's walls became reality, and on November 5th, 1995, the Doylestown Rock Gym opened its doors.

Within the next few years, the Rock Gym continued to add walls as they gained a following, eventually acquiring the remaining portion of the building to create a party space and program arena.

"Rock climbing, in general, has grown in popularity exponentially for the past few years," says Dana Caracciolo, General Manager of the Doylestown Rock Gym. "We recognize that climbing is something different to everyone. For some people it is a lifestyle, while others may just bring their kids in to run out some energy."

Of course, the beauty of rock climbing is that those kids' parents can (and often do) join in. "It is truly a life time sport," says Caracciolo. "In my younger years, I was all about climbing the hardest thing I could. My climbing has changed and evolved over the years, just as I have. Now, it is an activity that I share with my children." This buffer for change of pace in the activity allows everyone to participate, at any age. "Everyone and anyone can do it."

And that's great news for people who want to get in shape but hate the idea of lifting weights or running on a treadmill in a traditional gym. "Climbing is a true full-body workout that incorporates strength, endurance and flexibility," Caracciolo explains. "When you combine that with the social atmosphere of climbing, it makes for a very enjoyable workout."

Once you've experimented indoors, why not try the real thing? Doylestown, Pennsylvania is a great place for climbers, says Caracciolo: "We are fortunate to have real rock climbing all around us." The gym offers trips and hands-on instruction on-site at High Rocks, located in the Ralph Stover State Park. "First time climbers usually participate in our Introduction to Outdoor Rock Climbing trip," says Caracciolo. "You don't need any experience or equipment, just a sense of adventure!"

The Doylestown Rock Gym has worked hard - and been quite successful - at providing equipment, walls, and instruction for everyone. "We really try to provide all climbers with the best experience possible," says Caracciolo. "Whether it is their first time here or they have been climbing for twenty years." The gym offers children's programs, including birthday party events and summer camps, as well as provides adult memberships to the facility.

The Doylestown Rock Gym is located at 3853 Old Easton Rd in Doylestown.
