Great Times Abound at Harper's Tavern

By Jake Levin

For everything that's changed in the world over the last 200 or so year's, at least one thing has remained a constant in Annville, Pa.

That would be Harper's Tavern, a 213 Historical Landmark, which is currently owned and operated by Joey Straw. After working in restaurants her whole life, Straw fulfilled her dream of owning one when she bought Harper's Tavern in 2004. The location in South Central Pennsylvania offers casual dining at its finest Monday through Saturday.

"I worked so hard for other people and decided to do this for myself," Straw said of her initial decision to buy the restaurant.

Harper's Tavern is heavily involved in the military community, given its proximity to Fort Indiantown Gap. Straw said that soldiers frequent cozy atmosphere of Harper's Tavern, as soldier's feel like home when they visit. All active military members receive a 10 percent discount on their tab.

"We serve real food prepared in house and the servers here cater to all of our customers needs," Straw said of the mass appeal of Harper's Tavern.

The menu is vast, but among Straw's favorites include the crab cakes and prime rib. Salads with steak and/or grilled chicken are also a hot commodity, as are the half pound burgers and fresh cut french fries.

The old-time feel of Harper's shines through in the wall-lit sconces and tableside candles, not to mention the beautiful fireplace that anchors the room.

"Whether you are joining friends in the Tavern for one of our daily drink specials or celebrating your anniversary in the Harper's Library, you are sure to find an atmosphere that enhances your dining experience," reads the restaurant's website, www.harperstavern.com.

Harper's is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. Each night has its own signature menu item, including thick-cut pork chops on Mondays, pasta on Tuesdays, ribs and wings on Wednesdays, steaks on Thursdays and prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays.
