High Point Philly Makes Delicious Treats For The City Of Brotherly Love

By Mike Abelson

Philadelphia is a renowned food city, most famously known for its cheesesteaks. With two locations in the Mt. Airy section of the section, and a production facility located on Germantown Ave, the cafe offers homemade pastries, freshly-roasted coffee and also provides catering services. Owner and president Meg Hagele tells us how the cafe came to be and how its maintained its success.

What was the inspiration behind opening High Point Philly? How long have you been in business?

I opened High Point Cafe in 2005 shortly after moving back home to Philadelphia from 9 years in Seattle where I owned a shop for the last few years I was there. I wanted to create a community gathering place that would be the "high point of your day".

The most important thing for me is service. We serve our community through everything we do. The pastries we make from scratch everyday, the coffee we ethically source and meticulously roast, our extensive barista training, the commitment to making our Gluten Free products taste as good as their traditional counterparts, and then, not least of all, the welcome environment we create inside the shop, are all essential to our mission. We want to be the place you come to on a bad day for comfort and to celebrate on a great day. We want to be the place you bring your friends from out of town, where you come on your birthday, where your dog runs away to, and where your kids want to have their first job.

How would you describe the atmosphere the cafe offers to patrons?

We are home. Our atmosphere is warm and welcoming.

What are a few of your personal favorite or most popular menu items and why?

Early on, as we were first getting open and experimenting with offerings, we just had too many ideas to settle on one menu. So, we developed categories and just had fun within them. What we discovered was people began to engage with the pastry case more than if we always had the same things to choose from. We found that people could 'save' themselves for the day their favorite pastry was in, while others could find a new favorite nearly everyday.

To this day, with over 24 different items each day, we change our menu daily. It allows us to respond to the seasons as well as to the inspiration of our staff. Pistachio Cream Brioche, Cheddar and Smoked Paprika Croissant, Fresh Herb and Feta Biscuits, Jasmine Greentea Honeysuckle Cakes, just to name a few of my favorites. Our coffees are also exquisite. Our espresso was designed to be enjoyed straight. It is full and rich and creamy on its own and blends beautifully with steamed milk and even our housemade dark chocolate sauce, or lavender syrup. Our philosophy is if we can make it better than we can buy it, we make it. So, when you come to High Point you get quality and variety that you can't get anywhere else.

Why do you think High Point Philly is an excellent choice for catering an event?

We translated our philosophy of handmade quality to our catering division when we launched in September 2017. We make all our own breads for our sandwiches, our own crostini for crudite and cheese platters, as well as our already unique and rotating variety of pastries and desserts. Even something as simply as a ranch dressing for our turkey & cheddar sandwich is made in house. We source as much as possible locally and seasonally, so there are items on our catering menu that change with the seasons. We love what we do and we love sharing it with our community. It's exciting that our community is growing beyond just Mt Airy where we started over 12 years ago."
