Mary's Cheers Bar: Your Pit Stop for Great American Comfort Food and Local Brews

By Marina Jokic

Mary's Cheers Bar is a household name in Manheim, Pennsylvania. Known for its classic finger foods and homemade chili, Mary's is a friendly neighborhood tavern that delivers on its promise of deliciously simple American fare and local brews.

There is nothing like a frothy pint paired with some freshly made comfort foods. This is a winning combination, especially when the fare is prepared on the spot. When it comes to this crowd favorite duo, Mary's Cheers Bar fits the bill. With finger-licking bar food classics like juicy hamburgers and crunchy chicken fingers, Mary's is the place to satisfy your cravings. In operation for over 20 years, it's located in South Central Pennsylvania not far from the Hershey Amusement Park and Lancaster Amish Country.

"My inspiration for keeping Cheers open is the concept of keeping taverns [a thing of the present]," owner Mary Kover said. "Our goal is to always say hello to all who walk [through] our doors."

Mary's Cheers Bar sports an unassuming, casual, and very friendly atmosphere which keeps guests coming back. Kover's mantra is "best service and great food." Indeed, the food is quite simple, but unforgettably delicious. Mary's Chili is one of the signature items on the menu, a dish made entirely from scratch and full of spicy, smoky goodness. There is a slew of favorite pub foods such as steak sandwiches, beef tacos, baked potato, nachos, mozzarella sticks and hearty stews and soups. There are various specials throughout the week available at discounted prices.

"We are not known for first-class dinners but [we are] known for my chili, homemade soups, [and] great burgers made with fresh ingredients, fresh salads and anything else I [happen to] make," Kover said. "Great beer selection, liquors, and wines [are also our forte]; we are a great pit stop for people."

Kover personally prepares the chili, stews and soups from scratch, a ritual which she has preserved over the years. The five salad plates, generously portioned, include a choice of Caesar greens or a vegetable tossed salad with various combinations of chicken, beef, cheeses, walnuts, and other fixings. Notable specialties not always on the menu are the crab cakes, made in-house, and the filet mignon sandwiches which are offered once a week.

Mary's Cheers Bar is a great place to unwind and enjoy a fresh local brew and some appetizers. To sweeten the pot, Kover has introduced live music and interactive entertainment like dart boards, four television sets, and football watching parties.

"My favorite part about serving at Cheers is seeing customers come back and meeting people from all over the place," Kover said.
