Mother-Son Business The Real Marketplace Combines Food and Consignment

By Kelly Church

Offering gourmet foods in Wyncote, PA, The Real Marketplace is owned by a mother and son duo that took their weekend passion and turned it into a lucrative business. Shawn "Real" Savage is part owner, with his mom Jean Savage being the other half of the partnership. Shawn, an entrepreneur and entertainer, and Jean, an experienced medical professional, would spend their weekends exploring the city to find the best fine foods.

"I felt a calling to take some time away from music and open a few businesses with one of them being The Real Marketplace to give my mother a home away from home after retiring," Real said. "This combined passion for gourmet foods, beverages and consignment items led to a very successful launch and continued success over the last three years."

The Real Marketplace has a selection of coffees, pastries, bagels and breads. Customers can also purchase freshly made sandwiches, salads or burgers, or build their own customized sandwich.

"My personal [favorite], which also happens to be the fan favorite, is The Big Black Bean Chipotle Burger," Real said. "[It's] a meatless burger topped with marinated peppers, jack cheese, mixed greens, avocado and a spicy salsa."/p>

In the consignment section of the store, called Lady Jean's Consignment Corner, customers can find vintage collectors items, original art, antiques, home décor and small furniture items. All of the profits made on consignment items are split 50/50 with the consignor.

The mother-son element of the business is something that Real said takes a little pressure off. Instead of having to worry about his partner, he knows his partner always has his back.

"The best part about owning a business as a mother-son duo is the loyalty that is ever present," Real said. "In business, it is very common for partners to question if the others involved will work as hard as they will to reach the vision. This is something that we don't worry about because we are both committed to the common goal and don't want to let one another down."
