By Craig Gouker

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

I started Craig Gouker Roofing 23 years ago in 1991 in McKeesport, PA. In the years since, we have grown, opening a warehouse and showroom with a fleet of vehicles and specialty equipment allowing us to be experts specializing in asphalt shingle residential roof replacement. In addition to roof replacement we also offer siding, gutters & downspout, soffit & fascia installation.

What are the most popular roofing materials you install and the latest trends in roofing designs or styles?

One of the most popular shingle manufacturers is Owens Corning™ and in particular their TruDefinition® Duration® Line. Dimensional shingle styles are the newest trend which Owens Corning ? carries in the Duration® Designer Collection. This style ads more bold contrast and shadow for a dimensional look.

What's one of the biggest challenges that homeowners face when it comes to their roofs?

The biggest challenge that homeowners face when it comes to their roof is the costs. A roof is a big investment and maintenance and repair are vital to making it last. Another challenge homeowners face is finding the right contractor to work on their home's roof. The old saying goes, "you get what you pay for". Spending their money wisely and hiring the right contractor pays off by getting quality installation and minimizing the need for future repair.

What are some important things a homeowner should consider before hiring a roofing contractor?

Homeowners need to take the time to do their homework. Don't be pressured into making a quick decision. If a salesman is forcing a quick decision they should beware. There are several questions that a homeowner should ask a potential contractor:

  • Are they insured with the proper classifications? This is for the protection of the homeowner from accidents that could occur on their property.
  • Are they properly licensed in their state?
  • How long have they been in business? Are they a local company or passing through town? An established company has a history of satisfied customers and will be there to address future repairs.
  • Do they use quality materials and equipment? Are they certified by manufactures to install their products?
  • Do they use sub-contractors or hire their own employees?
  • Are they asking for a large down payment or payment up front? Most honest and established roofers will require little to no money before the work is completed.
  • Do they have a track record of success? BBB, Angie's List, and other online reviews are a great way to get the opinion of other homeowners who have experienced the contractor's craftsmanship.

What expert tips do you normally leave your clients when it comes to maintaining their roofs to make them last long?

Most importantly homeowners should have a maintenance schedule. Make sure to clean debris, clean gutters, watch for signs of damage and wear on a regular basis to ensure any potential problems can be addressed before they get worse. No roof lasts forever, but a little TLC goes a long way.

What advice would you give someone who's in a situation where they need an emergency roof repair because of a leak or dry rot?

Don't procrastinate! Call a professional at the first signs of a problem. They can come out and assess the situation, find the problem and its source, and recommend a solution before the more damage is done.
