Farm to Table in Harrisburg: Stock's on Second

By Christian Burney

KJ and Stephen Weinstock opened Stock's on Second in 1998 in Harrisburg, PA in order to pursue their passion for food and the dining experience. For Stephen Weinstock, his love for the hospitality business started in high school.

"I started working at the Harrisburg Marriott, in their food and beverage department," says Weinstock. "I thoroughly enjoyed this job, and it opened up many doors for me, allowing me to work my way up through the ranks to a food and beverage manager." That job brought Stephen to Pittsburgh, and later to San Francisco. The experience inspired him to take the reins of a restaurant of his own.

Stock's on Second is an open space with mahogany woodwork and hanging bare bulb lighting. The table tops were brought in from wood upcycled from a Pittsburgh barn. A glass waterfall separates the dining area from the kitchen. It's a clean, simple setting to showcase the Weinstocks' locally-sourced food.

"We like to support our local farmers by utilizing as many products as we can from them," says Weinstock. "By personally knowing the source of these products, it provides us with the assurance we need," says Weinstock. "We are providing the freshest ingredients to our customers and this allows us an opportunity to educate our customers about the link between farmers and the products we provide."

Weinstock reflects on his favorite dinner items offered at Stock's on Second: "Our new menu will feature duck wings, tossed in a thai chili sauce." The ingredients, Weinstock ads, come from Pekin Paradise, a local farm just out of Hamburg, PA. "This dish is delicious." Another favorite of Weinstock's is the roasted marrowbones, which are produced at Warrington Farms of Dillsburg, PA.

KJ and Stephen Weinstock are to thank for one of the most highly regarded restaurants in Harrisburg. Stock's on Second is situated at 211 N. Second Street, Harrisburg PA.
