Sweet Magnolia Bakery Brings Southern Sweetness to Southeastern Pennsylvania

By Pamela Sosnowski

Diane Simmons has been bringing a touch of southern sweetness, literally, to the southeastern Pennsylvania area since 2015. She originally started Sweet Magnolia Bakery in Fayetteville, NC where she and her husband lived for 16 years before relocating to the Kennett Square area where her bakery can be found today, tantalizing customers with favorites such as her tropical cheesecake, best selling coconut cake, rolled baklava, and more.

"I love sharing some of my favorite recipes here in Pennsylvania," she said. "I have many recipes from family members and friends that I have been given over the years (and) I cherish each one if them. By making these sweets I feel like I am sharing my family and friends with new friends."

Entertaining and baking is definitely in Simmons' blood. She has always loved baking and her culinary skills helped her high school win The Betty Crocker Homemaker test when she was in the 9th grade. She continued to bake for events throughout college and later hosted her own dessert parties while living in the south and Singapore, wowing her guests with her home baked treats.

Sweet Magnolia Bakery is open by appointment only and features an array of cakes, cupcakes, cookies, cheesecakes, and holiday themed desserts. One of the most requested cakes according to Simmons is her mother's coconut cake, which contains four layers of butter caked glazed with fresh grated coconut and covered with whipped cream and more coconut. Her s'mores cheesecake is another standout, a chocolate chip and marshmallow-filled cheesecake in a graham-cracker crust drizzled with chocolate and melted marshmallows.

Many of Sweet Magnolia Bakery's selections are ordered for weddings, showers, birthdays, and other celebrations. One of her newest offerings is dessert shooters, where the dessert is presented in a cup for creative presentation and convenience. In addition to desserts, the bakery also offers what Simmons calls savory catering.

"We offer finger foods such as mini croissants with chicken salad, mini buns with various meats, and mini tarts," she said. "Meal catering has ranged from pulled pork, baked spaghetti and meatloaf to pork tenderloin with sweet potato biscuits. We can provide a menu to fit your occasion."

Reviews routinely cite how moist and fresh tasting all of Simmons creations are, as well as her attention to detail and undivided attention towards each customer. New customers often find their way to Simmons after tasting one of her desserts at an event. While Sweet Magnolia Bakery is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, consultations and pick-ups must be done by appointment only.
