The Importance of Hiring a Landscape Designer: An Interview with Tory Graver of Graver's Landscape Design

By Tory Graver

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

I grew up on my family Christmas tree farm. With all the beautiful land to work with, I was always involved in some type of project from building rock walls, growing trees and other specimens, to beautifying our man made pond. After graduation in 2003, I started branching out to other people's homes to help get through college. Before I knew it, Graver's Landscape Design became a well established business currently employing 4 full time employees in addition to myself, many part time workers, and a registered landscape architect.

What are some of the services your company provides?

Graver's Landscape Design provides master plan designs for both residential and commercial applications, hardscaping, landscaping, lawn and shrub maintenance, and a snow removal service.

In your opinion, why is it important to utilize the services of a landscape designer?

In our opinion, being a landscape designer sets us above other landscapers in the business. We are able to work with the dreams of the homeowner and put them into a creative, educated virtual 3-D design for their home. We can then work together to make changes and start the design build process. Design build means we tie down as many unknown variables as possible but are equipped to make any changes as needed as we go.

What sort of knowledge would a landscape designer have that a homeowner most likely would not?

Many times homeowners have an idea of what they want, but do not know the products available, budget that would be required, and plantings that would grow best in their environment. We are able to help customers in all these areas focusing on Pennsylvania native plants which require less maintenance and help to conserve the beauty of our state's natural landscape. This approach to detail alone sets us above other landscape contractors.

How can hiring a landscape designer help to save money in the long run?

Sadly, many homeowners in this economy are less apt to spend the money on a professional design and service, and may end up choosing to work with a "bush planter" gaining them nothing but headaches with plantings that don't grow where placed because of required sunlight and soil, bloom all at once and leave a boring curb appeal for the rest of the year, and other such issues. We end up being called to fix this type of landscape which costs the homeowner more money in the long run.

As a landscape designer, what resources do you have that would not be available to a homeowner?

The resources available to us from the knowledge of our landscape architect with a degree from Cornell University and 20 years of hardscape experience from our workers are not available to most homeowners.
