What is a Handy Man?

By Walter Luft

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

I've always enjoyed working with my hands, building and fixing around the home, and so, I started doing handyman and light construction projects, not only for myself, but for family and friends. I established Freedom Handyman Services, Inc. based on the idea that I would provide honest quality craftsmanship at a reasonable cost, treat customers and their homes with respect and guarantee all of my work. If I did that, my business would grow, and it has. We do everything from small handyman projects to complete kitchen and bathroom remodeling and basement finishing.

Can you briefly describe what a handyman is?

A handyman is a person skilled at a wide range of repairs, typically around the home. These tasks include trade skills, repair work, maintenance work, both interior and exterior, and are sometimes described as "odd jobs", "fix-up tasks", and include light plumbing jobs such as fixing a leaky toilet or light electric jobs such as changing a light fixture. In our case, we have the knowledge and experience to accomplish almost any project in your home.

What are some of the services you offer?

  • Custom carpentry: crown molding, chair rails, base molding, window and door molding, shadow box molding, built-in shelving, interior doors, etc.
  • Plumbing: repair, replace, install faucets, drains, valves, garbage disposals, dishwashers, toilets,
  • shower valves, water softeners, sump pumps, etc.
  • Electrical: repair, replace, install, outlets, switches, ceiling fans, appliances, recessed lighting, under cabinet lighting, accent lighting, light fixtures, outdoor lighting, new circuits, new/upgrade circuit panels, etc.
  • Small remodeling projects: such as new closet, closet organizers, add/remove a wall, repair and replace windows and doors, small flooring projects, replace vanity, bath cabinets, interior painting, etc.
  • Large remodeling: kitchen, bath and basement remodeling, whole house remodeling, large flooring projects, etc.
  • Exterior projects: install or repair decks and porches, replace rotted trim, security lighting, small landscaping projects, gutter cleaning and repair, fence repair, power washing, etc.

What are the benefits of your business versus one that specializes in just one area, say a plumber?

Because we are skilled in many areas, there is less need to search for other contractors to complete most jobs so you only have to deal with one company. You can call a plumber to fix a water leak coming into your living room ceiling, but then you will still need to find someone to repair the ceiling, or you can call us. I recently was contacted by a woman who said her plumber wanted me to open up the ceiling so he could look for a leak. After he determined that the leak was not the result of a bad pipe or drain, I re-caulked the tub, which fixed the leak and then patched and painted the ceiling and installed recessed lighting. We could have done the entire job and saved her the money she spent on the plumber.

Does this make you more costly?

The fact that we can do so many aspects of home repair and remodeling saves the homeowner money and time. Our rates are below most any tradesman; i.e. plumber, electrician, carpenter, etc., and our customers don't have to deal with several companies, varying appointment times and scheduling to get their work completed.
