Why Choose Concrete Countertops: An Interview with Elizabeth Maurer of Liquid Stone Concrete Designs

By Elizabeth Maurer

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

Custom Concrete: Furniture, Countertops, Fireplace surrounds, Poured and Polished floors, Architectural. We also provide foundations for additions as well as plain slabs.

What are some of the most popular areas where homeowners in Pennsylvania are using concrete?

Kitchens, Bath, Bars, Tub surrounds, floors in homes and businesses.

Can you briefly talk about the benefits of having concrete countertops?

Aesthics mainly. See below re options etc. Concrete is actually denser and harder than granite. However, you should never cut on it, it will destroy your knives and it will incur scratches that may not be able to buff out.

What are the basic options that people have when it comes to design and pattern?

Custom colors, sizes, shapes, embellishments such as fossils, glass, metals, etc. We actually manufacture commissioned pieces of art for the home. No 2 pieces are alike! We do not manufacture slabs to cut. We form and pour each project individually. We welcome the client to participate while we are pouring their tops so they have a hands-on experience with their pieces.

In terms of functionality, what does a concrete countertop have to offer?

It provides a lifetime of beauty and durability. While it performs the same function as any other countertop material, it is still a piece of art with its own personality.

What is your personal favorite advice to give homeowners deciding on getting new countertops?

Think about the countertops first! Although the cabinetry gets the limelight during the design phase, it's the countertop that gets the final 'Ta Da' and should be considered first!
