Why You Need Proper Landscape Maintenance Regularly: An Interview with James Hoult of JKM Lawn Care LLC

By James Hoult

Please describe the background of your company and your qualifications.

JKM Lawn Care LLC has been in business since April 2007, we are predominately a lawn maintenance company but we also provide services like trimming bushes, shrubs & small trees, mulching, spring & fall cleanups (leaves), storm debris cleanup, overseeding and lawn treatments. We also provide snow removal services but only for commercial properties. Personally I have been involved in the green industry in some capacity for 26 years now. Our combined experience is in excess of 40+ years. I graduated from Philadelphia University in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in Finance and took graduate course work in Communications, Negotiations and Advanced Accounting.

For the last 10-years I have worked in the Construction Industry as a Credit Manager and have dealt directly with various contractors. My official title is President or Managing Member but I normally handle customer service, estimating, invoicing, collections, payables, bookkeeping, tax reporting, payroll and you will also see me in the field from time to time. My brother Karl handles the operational side of the business, ensuring that our vehicles and equipment are in proper order, that our team is doing the most efficient job and that the the finished product is consistent and of the highest quality each time.

What are the top points to consider when looking into proper landscape maintenance?

This really depends on the situation and what the customer is looking to achieve with their lawn or landscape. I would however recommend a systematic approach. Laid out properly this could really give true insight to your customer.

In your opinion, what are a few reasons it is important to routinely maintain your lawn?

It shows that you care about your property and your neighborhood in general. Simple TLC can go a long way to gain a lot of curb appeal.

What are some easy maintenance practices to avoid dead spots on my lawn?

Collect lawn clippings (if possible) to avoid thatch OR mulch the lawn at the proper height (this is what we do). Cutting too low can weaken the overall root structure of the lawn. This could leave the lawn open to disease or weed infestation. Dull mower blades could also be the cause of the problem, dull blades bend the grass rather than cut it.

How often should someone mow their grass?

This really depends on the weather. During the spring time we are mowing the majority of our lawns at least once per week. Some of our lawns could even use a cut every 5 days. During the hotter summer months we normally go to a bi-weekly schedule unless customers have irrigation systems.

What are the advantages of hiring a professional for this job?

I ask many of our customers or potential customers "What is your time worth?" by hiring a professional to handle the job, the homeowner gains valuable time to do other things like spend time with family, go on trips or just relax. Professionals often know the best times of the year to trim trees or prune shrubs and sometimes it is just cheaper to hire someone vs buying all the equipment, doing the work, servicing the equipment, etc, etc.

What is the best way for people to get in contact with you?

Email or text message. My goal is to return calls the same day or within 24 hours but during spring there could be a slight delay as we are handling multiple jobs for our long-standing customers.
